on a road trip, are most of your clothes in suitcase, a moving box, or a laundry basket?
in my mind, i always picture a perfect vintage case - a blue that's halfway between robin's egg + baby. in reality? i'm usually so happy to be getting on the road that i take whatever is on hand.
describe your nearest "getaway spot."
in a pinch, a hike up tiger mountain makes me feel like i'm in a different time + place. but if i have more time, i gravitate towards astoria oregon.
swim suit or skinny dip?
in my younger days i'd go night swimming in just my underwear... nowadays i stick to the suits.
one place in the world where you haven't been, but you MUST go.
ITALY.
the longest road trip you've taken ... solo or with a road trip buddy?
my [now] husband and i had only been together a few months when we went on tour with okkervil river. it was a dream come true for me. touring has a different rhythm than a carefree roadtrip, and somewhere around georgia i broke down crying. for some reason the neon peach glowing in the gas station window made me homesick for washington, and we still had weeks to go. since then i've learned to balance a little better on those trips, and appreciate that at least i'm not punching a time clock for the duration of a tour.
when visiting a new city, what intangible items are you hoping to capture?
getting to know a new city allows me to return home with a fresh perspective on the things i see daily. details that seem mundane or get overlooked begin to jump out at me. and while you can't bottle the feeling of freedom, you can recall fondly that you've had moments of pure escape; that has helped me survive many a day job.
what is your favorite junk food when traveling?
breakfast at cracker barrel. fatty fatty fat fat.
describe your favorite local hang-out.
my favorite bar feels like it could be anywhere, or dropped into a different decade. there's bullets in the bar + people throw peanut shells on the ground. during baseball season, it's the best place to sit and watch a game in the company of friends.
describe how you feel when you're alone with your camera and in a new location ...
i feel challenged, especially in a place that i love, to capture it and convey the full weight of the magic i feel while standing there.
what inspires you to take the next step by photographing, writing, or composing a song about the area you're in.
